Building Climate Resilience in Rural Sierra Leone

Climate change is no longer a distant threat—it is a daily challenge for many communities across Sierra Leone. Rising temperatures, irregular rainfall, and floods continue to affect food security, health, and infrastructure.

At SLIRD, we are working hand-in-hand with local farmers and community leaders to implement climate-smart practices that protect both lives and livelihoods.

Our Approach:

  • Training smallholder farmers in sustainable agricultural methods
  • Supporting the use of local innovation like biochar and composting
  • Conducting research on weather patterns to guide planting seasons
  • Promoting clean cookstoves and solar irrigation systems

Real Impact:

In Kambia District, over 120 women farmers have adopted new seed varieties that are drought-resistant and yield higher outputs. These small changes are bringing food security and economic empowerment to vulnerable households.

We believe that local knowledge, when backed by evidence, is a powerful force for climate resilience.
