Our History
The Sierra Leone Independent Research and Development Institute (SLIRD) was officially established in January 2025 as a forward-looking institution committed to transforming Sierra Leone’s private sector development landscape through inclusive research, local innovation, and evidence-based action in collaboration with government and within policy frameworks.
Â
SLIRD was created in response to a critical need for homegrown solutions to Sierra Leone’s interconnected challenges in agriculture, education, health, community interventions and climate resilience. From its inception, SLIRD has positioned itself as a bridge between communities, researchers, and policymakers, ensuring that development is driven by data, shaped by local realities, and guided by inclusive values.
With a special focus on youth and women’s empowerment, SLIRD integrates community knowledge systems with scientific inquiry to promote sustainable and scalable development practices. Its participatory model supports capacity building, policy innovation, and grassroots engagement across the country.
As a national platform for research and development, SLIRD continues to forge partnerships, foster learning, and incubate community-led projects that contribute to poverty reduction, equity, and resilience in Sierra Leone and the wider West African region.
